Translation is constantly on the move when it comes to appropriate style and terminology. If you are a translator and you are given a translation to do there are certain questions you need answering before you can proceed with a translation and get the best results.
First of all, you need to pinpoint your target audience for example if you are doing a translation from English to Spanish you need to know exactly who your target audience is and there are many to choose from when it comes to Spanish. It could be Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Chileans or Spanish and there are many others to choose from. It could be the translation is required for several different countries where Spanish is the most widespread language.
Generally speaking, a Spanish speaker should be able to understand your message in Spanish if he or she is from a Spanish speaking country. If you want the recipients of your translation to act on your translation you have to ensure a very accurate translation so that the message is understood completely. In some Spanish speaking countries, specific terms are used to convey the meaning which is not all shared between Spanish speakers in other countries.
This can be the same with an English German Translation as Germans live all around the world and over their years of being away from their native country they will have constructed and adapted words and phrases to suit their new environment. This means a German English Translator may find that any translation of product identity may not be fully understood by all Germans who reside outside Germany the main hub for the German language.
When a translation takes place for communication with a set of people this is called localisation because the message has been translated so that they will understand and act upon it in their specific language community. Some experienced translators in a pair of languages build up sets of glossaries which relate to the word usage of a specific country and language group.

Who should conduct the translation?

When it comes to an English Spanish translation a Spanish speaker from the country where the translation is going to be used could check the translation to make sure it fits the language of the people the translation is aimed at. You don’t need to be a specialist in your own language to be able to understand basic information in your own language but you need to know if your message is likely to impress on your target audience.
