Resources for Languages

If you are thinking of moving to another country, whether it is for work, retirement or a long vacation and it’s a country that only has a few speakers of its minority language, you may find it hard to find resources that can help you learn the language in advance. One such country is Latvia that only has 2 million speakers of the Latvian language. This means it’s difficult to find useful online learning resources. However, it is possible if you are determined to undertake some research.

How to Find Language Learning Resources for the Less Commonly Taught Languages

You will first need to know the targeted language by its English name and in its own language. If you try to look for resources using its English name you will find less than if you use its native name. Also, as you flick through websites, knowing the flag of the country whose language you are targeting is helpful, as it is a quick way of identifying it.
Some languages are categorised according to the family they belong to. The best way to find this out is to go to Wikipedia, which has all this information easily accessible. Now you are ready to do your language resource research.

Start your Research for Your Minority Language Resources

There are several key websites you should try first. DuoLingo might be one you have heard of, but even though it does have some good language courses it doesn’t necessarily cover the less commonly taught languages, so it’s probably not worth looking up.
Memorise is one of the most useful sites, as its learning is based on flashcards that encourage its users to create courses, so it does have included some less commonly taught languages. You can try searching for your minority language using their search facility.
Many countries that know they have a unique language often provide educational resources that focus on preserving, teaching and even defending their languages. These websites often have a great variety of resources to help to learn the language such as word lists and online games. It’s often difficult to find these resources because they are advertised and promoted in that language, which you will find hard to understand until you have some grasp of the language.
