Outsourcing is increasingly becoming an option for the service industry as service providers try and find ways of cutting costs, improving efficiency and staying ahead of their competitors. Outsourcing to countries such as India or the Philippines has often seen costs tumbling to a fraction of what might have been the norm in the base country. While the outsourcing of legal work itself has been not quite so popular, there is a lot to be said for the benefits of outsourcing legal translation.

There may be many reasons why outsourcing legal translation is of ultimate benefit to the legal firm or the company that has legal material that needs translating. While the main reason for outsourcing the legal tasks themselves – such as paralegal work and document review – is because it saves money, the main benefit of outsourcing translation is that the personnel responsible for the translation are better at doing it – more accurate and faster. Note the distinction being made here between the outsourcing of administrative and/or legal work – often the more repetitive and predictable work – and the translation of legal documents by highly skilled professionals.

In this case, outsourcing is a way that the company can concentrate on doing what it does best, while it leaves the translation tasks to trained people who do what they do best better and faster.

Of course, large organisations may have their own in-house translation team and the only purpose of outsourcing then becomes one of the financial economies, but most smaller businesses rarely have the staff capacity to translate their own legal documents into multiple languages.
The other benefit of leaving the translation of legal and other important documents to an outsourced provider is that it can be done when it is necessary rather than having to employ in-house staff for a task that is intermittent in nature. Outsourcing means that the translated documents can be normally uploaded or delivered to the translation provider and returned quickly just when they are required.
