Throughout this year, 2017, the translation industry has gone through a growth spurt and some interesting changes too.

Apps to Help Language Learning in Decline

There appears to have been a decline in interest in learning languages online this year, especially in Europe and the United States. These means the purchasing of apps and software to assist the learning of a language has declined. As a result, those who need translations are turning more to professional translators in preference to using apps or other online sources. Quality of a translation is becoming more important than a quick fix-it online translation.

The Global Translation Industry is Taking off in Asia

Partly due to Donald Trump being elected as the U.S. president, Asia is becoming the new hub for global translating needs. The Brexit referendum has had an effect too as in the future an expansion of business interests is expected to occur in Asian countries. If this develops Asia will have more trade opportunities between the world’s nations. In turn, professional translators will be hotly demanded in the world’s key languages as the translation industry exceeds expectations.

Machine Translation may Eventually Improve

So far there have been no positive developments or real improvements in machine translation (MT) technology but as more investment is put into this area the technology is likely to start producing a better product. There are a variety of stakeholders who are watching this trend, in particular, software developers, translation companies and some of the big online names such as Amazon, Google, and Facebook. However, there is nothing spectacular expected to happen in the near future for the translation industry.

Online Video Attracts Translators

Video streaming products like YouTube and Vimeo are becoming increasingly common. Along with this development has been the rise of Amazon Prime and Netflix. This has meant there has been a sudden need for translators particularly because at least 70 percent of new viewers do not speak English. As the year progresses online video translators and those who are prepared to do closed-captioning are expected to be in high demand.
