Australia gets a large number of different visa applications every year. There is in effect a quota system, which is tied to the need for the labour market, as well as satisfying Australian residents and citizens that close relatives may be able to come to the country and settle. If you are from Austria or Germany then it is possible that you will have to present a range of documents to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (the Australian Government department that oversees all immigration and visitor matters).
The visa situation in Australia, like many other countries, is quite complicated if you want to do anything other than just come for a holiday. Basically, if you are coming to Australia for a short holiday as a tourist from Austria or Germany you don’t need any documents except for a valid passport and you can apply online. You may want to do something else – perhaps work temporarily if you are young enough (this applies only to Germans and is not yet available for young Austrians). Or you may want to visit Australia on a cultural exchange or come to study in the country. You may intend working for longer periods, come to settle with family or immigrate permanently. You will probably find that you will need not only original documents to support your visa application but these will have to be translated into English as well by a certified German English translator.
Finding out which visa you need is easily the biggest hurdle you will face if you choose to come to Australia. However, the Department of Immigration’s website is quite user-friendly and leads you through what you need to do and what documents you need to support a particular visa class.
Generally, only documents that have been translated by a German translator who is accredited to the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) can be used to translate your documents. The government trusts a NAATI translator to do an accurate job translating such things as birth certificates, employment records and so on!
It is important that you check very carefully that you have all the documents that you need for a visa application and that they are legible. It is better to get duplicates from home if a necessary document is missing before you send them to the translator, rather than find that you have to complete the process later on. Applying for visas in Australia is neither free nor cheap, so doing the right thing is important throughout the whole process.
